MOTHER’S DAY: A Mother Lode Of Stats From The Facebook Data Science Team

The Facebook Data Science Team did not mark the fact that Mother’s Day is coming up Sunday with cards, flowers, or candy, but with a host of statistics about mothers on the social network. Stats from the Facebook Data Science Team included: More than 27 million women in the U.S. identify themselves as mothers on Facebook, either by connecting with their children who are also on the social network, or posting life events about giving birth. The average age of all mothers on Facebook is 47, while the average age of those who have had children since last Mother’s Day is 30. Carlos Diuk of the Facebook Data Science Team explained why the average age was so high: “Consider that for most moms on Facebook, we know that they are mothers because they are linked to their kids who are also on Facebook, and therefore those kids are over 13 years old. This explains why we see more moms in their 30s, 40s, or even 50s than in their 20s.” The distances between children and their mothers tend to increase when kids are between 20 and 30, and then stabilize after age 30, but they then see another upward bump when children are in their 40s. Diuk wrote: “We observe how the distance increases between the children and their moms in their 20s and 30s, as kids go to college, move to new jobs, etc. This trend stabilizes after age 30. One could speculate this is because children start establishing homes and jobs, and may not move further. A new upward move is observed when the children are in their 40s.
