Mobile Engagement Firm Apsalar Raises $5M In Funding; Hires Chief Revenue Officer

Apsalar, a mobile engagement management platform for iOS and Android, just announced that they have raised a Series A round of funding led by Thomvest Ventures, Battery Ventures, and DN Capital. In addition, the firm reported their new hire Anton Commissaris for the position of Chief Revenue Officer. More after the jump.

Apsalar has raised close to $5M in funding that it plans to use to expand its product portfolio, hire developers and ramp up business development efforts. Apsalar had previously raised $800K in seed funding from 500 Startups and other angel investors/groups in late 2010.

Apsalar’s product comes at a unique time when developers are trying to figure out how to maximize the value out of their app users. Apsalar’s solution provides mobile analytics and a way to behaviorally target users. This way developers can identify and deliver personalized content after installing the SDK which is fairly simple to install. Apsalar’s greater aim is to lead developers to greater engagement, retention and revenue.

According to Michael Oiknine, CEO and Founder of Apsalar, the company has experienced enormous growth in the last few months on both sides: customers and user reach since beginning of March to end of August in the area of 5-6000%. This growth accelerated their series A, sending the message of positioning to take on the big wave of custom relationship management that they dub as ‘mobile engagement management’.

When it comes to user engagement and analytics, developers need to think scientifically. We all know that one cannot develop a better app without an engaged user. To better deal with this issue, Apsalar has developed a 3 part framework:

  1. measure engagement and learn from measurements (advanced analytics)
  2. optimize measurement by leveraging user data to do A/B testing
  3. turn engagement into revenues using behavioral targeting and allow you within your apps across multiple publishers to target users and leverage past engagement.

Apsalar’s announcement comes at a time when Kontagent, the social analytics leader, is moving into mobile. Other analytics firms include Distimo and Flurry, amongst others. Apsalar’s approach to simplifying its value proposition for developers and a strong business development effort early on could make a huge difference in the adoption they see in the coming years. The addition of Anton Commissaris to the team is a valuable one. Commissaris has spent the last 15 years in the software and internet space.
