Microsoft Licenses Jinni’s Semantic Video Search Technology…But What Will They Use It For?

Today Jinni, taste-and-mood based discovery engine for TV and movies, has announced that Microsoft has licensed their semantic video discovery technology.  Jinni’s technology is a one-of-a-kind service that allows viewers to easily find content according to mood, plot, style and more and now Microsoft has access to the technology as well.  But what will they be using it for?  Only time will tell…

CEO and Co-founder of Jinni, Yossi Glick, says, “Microsoft’s choice to license the Jinni video discovery solution further validates our unique semantic technology and holistic approach to entertainment discovery.  At Jinni, we believe finding digital entertainment should be as natural and enjoyable as consuming it.  Our technology can power a wide variety of intuitive discovery tools, including: semantic search, personalized recommendations, and mood-based discovery features for a fun way to find movies and TV.”

So how will Microsoft be using Jinni’s technology?  For now it seems to be pretty Top Secret and a source at Jinni tells me, “Your guess is as good as mine.”  But the consensus seems to be that Microsoft is probably going to integrate the technology into their Xbox entertainment platform to provide home viewers with better discovery tools, or incorporate semantic recommendations into their search engine, Microsoft Bing.

Matt Brian of The Next Web adds, “It also suggests that Microsoft will look to develop its media offerings, perhaps utilizing Jinni’s recommendation service to power a redesigned version of its Media Center software, connecting to its online marketplace on both Windows Phone and Windows 8 to suggest televisions shows and films based on a user’s taste.”
