According to reports, Facebook will launch a test “with a small percentage of users,” enabling those users to send private messages to friends directly via the status update box.

TechCrunch reported that sources confirmed the test, saying that messaging will be integrated into the box atop the homepage where users currently update their statuses or upload photos.

Much like the Chat Heads feature the social network introduced when it debuted its Home Android overlay, TechCrunch believes this test is aimed at increasing the frequency of users returning to Facebook, via both desktop and mobile.

However, this potential new feature comes with risks, as TechCrunch pointed out that it makes it easy for users to accidentally post messages that were intended to be private as status updates.
