Selfie, Tweep And Hashtag Added To Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Yesterday I wrote about a new competition from Collins that is asking social media fans to choose their favourite new word to be added to the next edition of their popular dictionary. Now, Merriam-Webster has revealed that they’re adding selfie, tweep and hashtag to the next edition of their dictionary, amongst many others related to the digital world and modern life.

Merriam-Webster has been America’s leading source of language information for 150 years, and to celebrate the company has added 150 new words to the 2014 edition of the dictionary, including crowdfunding, gamification, big data, steampunk and fracking.

“So many of these new words show the impact of online connectivity to our lives and livelihoods,” explains Peter Sokolowski, Editor at Large for Merriam-Webster. “Tweep, selfie, and hashtag refer to the ways we communicate and share as individuals. Words like crowdfunding, gamification, and big data show that the Internet has changed business in profound ways.”
