Mayor McCheese would most certainly not approve: Facebook posts offering free $100 gift cards to McDonald’s lead not to hamburgers and fries, but to malware.
Sophos’ Naked Security blog shared a report from Hoax-Slayer on the McDonald’s gift card scam, which baits users who click on the link into installing rogue Facebook applications.
According to Naked Security, victims see their accounts used to spread the fake promotions, and after installing the apps that promise them gift cards, they are prompted to participate in more offers and online surveys, some of which require sharing of personal information including name, information, and contact details.
Some users are prompted to download questionable tool bars, games, or other software.
