You can’t tell the players without a scorecard, and when it comes to local businesses on Facebook, social marketing platform Roost is aiming to provide data on the effectiveness of their social media presences with a free tool.

The tool enables local businesses to gauge how effectively their efforts on Facebook are penetrating their local markets, and a proprietary algorithm examines geographic distribution of likes and ties that into population data for the local market and other relevant data points to arrive at a score of 1 to 100.

Roost Local Scorecard also offers suggestions on steps businesses can take to improve their scores; and the company said this is just the first in a series of Scorecards it will release.

Roost wrote in a post on its blog:

Today, Roost is announcing the Social Media Scorecard for local businesses, a free monitoring tool to help you understand where your fans are located.
