An off-duty security guard and his accomplice were arrested following the theft of 49 laptops from Facebook’s former headquarters in Palo Alto, Calif., early Tuesday morning.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Sunnyvale, Calif., residents Brandon Simon, 20, who patrolled the site at 1050 Page Mill Road, and Travis Calhoun, 21, were spotted by a private security guard, who notified police after they fled the scene while carrying items.
According to the Chronicle, a police sergeant spotted a vehicle matching the description from the private security guard, being trailed by a second vehicle, and stopped both cars, discovering a stolen license plate, burglary tools (including a crowbar, mallet, and screwdriver), and bins of laptop computers belonging to the social network.
The Chronicle reported that Facebook had reported a broken window pane near an exterior door the previous morning.
According to the newspaper, Simon and Calhoun were booked on suspicion of commercial burglary, grand theft, possession of stolen property, and conspiracy, which are all felony charges, while Simon was also arrested on suspicion of embezzlement and resisting arrest.
