Ouya, the video game console-in-progress that earned more than $8.5 million on Kickstarter, will ship to lucky backers starting December 28.

The small, inexpensive gaming unit built on the Android won points with developers for making it easy to translate the games for television sets. More than 600 developers had pledged $699 to receive the Developers Special reward of getting first crack at the console.

Ouya is right on schedule with the first round of shipments, which will contain “an early version of the OUYA console and controller designed for developers to test their games on OUYA,” according to the project creator’s Kickstarter page.

Despite success stories like this one, Kickstarter remains focused on other types of creative projects.
