Penguin Group has launched a Twitter book club, offering book worms a chance to chat with each other about their favorite passages via hashtag chats and even hear from the book’s author him or herself.
The Penguin Book Club launched in February with The Weird Sisters by Eleanor Brown as the inaugural title.
March’s title will be Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. Penguin team members will lead regular discussions on Twitter with members of the book club, and in early April, when everyone has read the book, the book’s author will hop on Twitter for an hour long hashtag chat with those who loved the read.
The hashtag associated both with the designated hashtags chats for the book club as well as periodic rumination as you flip the pages is #readpenguin. Penguin staff will moderate the regular Twitter meetings via their official @PenguinUSA account.
In the first week of February when the Twitter-based book club launched, the #readpenguin hashtag saw more than 24 million impressions and reached 1.5 million people.
Jeff Gomez, Penguin Group (USA) VP of Online Consumer Sales and Marketing, explains the decision to take the traditional book club digital:
“The Penguin Twitter Book Club allows readers and fans to instantly and constantly interact with Penguin and our authors. Our overall web strategy is to go where the users are, and wherever there’s an audience discussing our books. The Penguin Twitter Book Club and our other social networking endeavors are crucial in connecting our writers to readers everywhere.”
