Your Inner Superhero Demands This Ap

To coincide with this month’s release of Iron Man 3 on Blu-ray, Marvel have released a JARVIS app for iPhone. For those who don’t know, JARVIS is Tony Stark’s AI assistant, voiced by Paul Bettany in the movies. So it does sound pretty awesome. In theory.

But don’t ditch Siri just yet.

Although the voice-activated JARVIS can set alarms and check the time and weather for you, the rest of its functions seem kind of gimmicky to us.

JARVIS can download ringtones, post content to Facebook on your behalf (because we sure can’t get enough of that) and act as a remote control for the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray.

You can even unlock 42 Iron Man suits — not that we have any idea what you’re supposed to do with them (you certainly can’t wear them). We’ve got a sneaking suspicion that unlocking at least one of these suits will involve posting something to Facebook. Sigh.

Kids and merchandise-obsessed fans will love this app, but after the novelty wears off, it doesn’t look like JARVIS will have much of a long-term appeal. After all, there are only so many times you can say “Play” to a DVD player before it gets old.

But perhaps we’re asking a bit much of JARVIS, considering it’s a free application. What it lacks in functionality, JARVIS makes up for in character and geekiness. It looks pretty cool, and it’s voiced by Paul Bettany, so we’re prepared to give it points for authenticity if nothing else.

And it’s not meant to be a replacement for Siri. If you take the app at face value — as a neat little DVD tie-in with a few additional features — you won’t be disappointed.

JARVIS, initialize download sequence.
