Apple’s vice president of iPod, iPhone, and iOS product marketing Greg Joswiak lifted the lid on the fifth generation of iPod Touch devices at today’s iPhone 5 press event in San Francisco, revealing that voice-activated assistant Siri is now available on the device, which will sport the same 4-inch, 16:9 aspect ratio screen as the iPhone 5.

Constructed out of anodized aluminum, the fifth generation Touch is 6.1mm thick and weighs 88 grams — making it the thinnest and lightest iPod Touch to date. The latest version of the iPod Touch will also support the new Lightning connector.

Apple has also improved the cameras on the iPod Touch. The rear camera is 5-megapixels, and is comes with an LED flash, autofocus, f/2.4 aperture, and a sapphire crystal lens cover like the iPhone 5’s. The front-facing camera now supports FaceTime HD at 720p. iO6’s new Panorama photo mode also finds its way onto the Touch, which lets the user take a series of pictures that can be stitched together to make a single panoramic image. Video-wise the Touch can shoot 1080p video with image stabilization and face detection.

For the first time, the iPod Touch is available in multiple colors including silver, black, blue, yellow, and red; it also comes with a color matching wrist strap that can be affixed to the back of the device. According to Apple, the battery on a new iPod Touch will last for 40 hours of music playback and 8 hours of video playback. The same A5 chipset that powers the iPhone 4S is now found on the iPod Touch, improving both the processing speed and graphics. The Wi-Fi-only iPod Touch features Bluetooth 4.0 with LE and 802.1n connectivity, just like the iPhone 5.

At today’s iPhone 5 launch event, Joswiak claimed the Touch is the most popular music player and game player in the world. The iPod Touch supports more than 175,000 game and entertainment apps. The fifth generation Touch is priced at $299 for the 32GB model and $399 for the 64GB model. Pre-ordering for the Touch starts on Sept. 14 and the devices will be available starting in October.
