Pending Facebook Acqusition Instagram Sprucing Up Website?

By David Cohen

Pending Facebook acquisition Instagram may be looking to expand its Web presence if a discovery by Web designer Cole Reinke leads to anything. The photo-sharing application was acquired by the social network for $1 billion in April, and the transaction has not yet officially closed.

Reinke captured the screen grab below of a pull-down menu allowing Instagram users to view their profiles directly from the app’s website, although he said clicking on the link resolved to a 404 error, and the view profile selection was pulled soon thereafter. He wrote on Tumblr:

Online Instagram profiles coming soon? Clicking on the link lead me to a 404 error at my profile address. When I looked to see if it was still there three hours later, it had disappeared. But before I saw the option appear, Instagram went down for a minute or two.

Instagram currently suggests other Web destinations for viewing its photographs in a post in its help center:

While we’re still developing our Web presence at, we encourage you to check out third-party sites that have been created using the official Instagram API. We’ve listed some of those sites and apps below.
