Facebook’s tradition of inviting the press to events without revealing what it is announcing has been passed down to Instagram, as the Facebook-owned photo-sharing network will hold a media event in New York Dec. 12.
Several reporters received invitations via FedEx, which read:
You are invited to share a moment with (Instagram Co-Founder and CEO) Kevin Systrom and the Instagram team.
Along with paper invitations, some journalists also received blocks of wood with Instagram photos printed on them and a hanger to hang them on walls.
The fact that Instagram sent out printed invitations and wood blocks led some reporters, including Jordan Crook of TechCrunch and Seth Fiegerman of Mashable, to speculate that Instagram will announce some sort of photo-printing initiative.
Private messaging features were another popular guess, as Om Malik of GigaOM cited “well-placed sources” in a November report that the next version of Instagram may include such features, with Malik mentioning group messaging as another possibility.
