Indiegogo Campaign Raises Over $300,000 (And Growing) For Bullied Bus Monitor To Go On Vacation

The life of 68-year-old bus monitor Karen Huff Klein has been changed forever, thanks to Reddit user Max Sidorov.  After seeing a video on Facebook of Karen the Bus Monitor being bulled by schoolchildren, Sidorov uploaded the video to YouTube and started an Indiegogo fundraiser to raise money to give Karen a well-deserved vacation.  As of this posting one day later the campaign has raised over $300,000 from over 14,300 funders.

Sidorov writes on Reddit that, “As soon as I heard of Karen Huff Klien… I had to create a fundraiser here for this nice lady.  Lets give Karen a vacation of a lifetime, lets show her the power of the Internets and how kind and generous people can be.”

While it is unclear exactly how Sidorov found Karen, he has linked to her Facebook page and explains on Indiegogo that he is in touch with her daughter, who wrote on Indigogo this morning, “This is Amanda (tammbg below).  I am Karen’s daughter and I just joined this campaign.  I have spoken with Max and with Indigogo and we just want to thank you so much for your support.  I am at work now so can’t put a picture up yet.  We are completely overwhelmed with all the support, so thank you.”

This morning Klein told Good Morning America that she is inspired by the positive reaction.  “It does make me feel a whole lot better.  I appreciate everything.  I think it’s awesome.”  As of this morning, though, she says she will not be quitting her job.  “That’s not like me.  I’m not a real vindictive person.  I just know I want something to happen to make them [the students] realize what they did.”  I think the $300,000-plus Indigogo campaign will be a real start!

Indiegogo’s CEO Slava Rubin put out the following statement:

“Everyone at Indiegogo was so proud this morning to see Karen Klein on television talking so bravely about her experience and we hope that this Indiegogo campaign contributes positively to the important national discussion about bullying.”

What do you think about Max Sidorov and the Indigogo campaign?  The campaign has already surpassed it’s $5,000 goal by leaps and bounds.  How much money do you think will be raised by the July 20 deadline?
