After three very long hours of technical difficulties, uncouth Chatroulette jokes and a flood of #streamyfail tweets, the Streamy Awards finally came to a close tonight. Half the audience had already cleared out of the Orpheum Theater in downtown LA and hardly anyone was left watching the show’s live stream on Ustream. The show’s host, Paul Scheer, seemed to capture the mood perfectly with his closing comment, “Thank you ladies and gentlemen. If there was a Streamy Award for patience, you would win it.”
I thought that the Streamys were supposed to be “the most prestigious awards ceremony devoted to honoring the excellence in original web television programming and those who create it.” At least, that’s what it says on their website. But this awards show seemed to do just the opposite. It was chock full of off the cuff remarks about how nobody watches web series or has ever heard of the Streamys, how nobody knows who any of the people in the audience are and that there is no money in web television.
I expected something much more professional when I tuned in to watch the Streamys. It was evident that they had not had a dress rehearsal, that they had not tested out their jokes and that they had not put nearly enough attention into working out all the technical aspects of putting together a live streaming award show. The timing was off, the sound levels were off and I even watched as people tweeted during the beginning of the show about the feed coming in and out. The constant stream of tweets and comments during the show was filled with anti-Streamy notions and viewers contemplating whether or not they should just stop watching. It appears that a lot of them did just that.
Despite the failure of the awards show itself, the winners still deserve our respect. Some of the biggest winners included Agents of Cracked with the Audience Choice Award for Best Web Series, Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis with the Best Comedy Web Series, AutoTuneTheNews with the Best News or Politics Web Series, and Shane Dawson with the award for Best Vlogger. The full list of 2010 Streamy Award winners will be posted on the Streamy website.
Were you able to force yourself through the Stream Awards? Did you find it to be as much of a failure as most others did?
