Mystery Tweeter Is Giving Away Cash To San Francisco Citizens

If you're in San Francisco right now, there's an account you should be following: @HiddenCash. The anonymous tweeter behind this account is giving away cold hard cash to intrepid San Francisco-ites who can figure out the cryptic clues pointing to the location of the money. With over 100,000 followers amassed since signing up for Twitter on May 23rd, the @HiddenCash account is taking Twitter by storm. Its bio reads: "An anonymous social experiment for good ☼ Real Cash hidden around SF & beyond. Find the $ - share tweetphoto + tag @hiddencash" And it really is as simple as that. So far, the account has given away over $5,000 to lucky tweeters in the Bay area. Before a "drop", the account will tweet a lead-up letting its followers know that the location clue is coming. Then, a few minutes later, it will tweet a cryptic clue or photo pointing to the location, and leave the rest up to its follower base of eager urban treasure hunters. New drop. See it??? Love this place! pic.twitter.com/8U3ADVkSK3— Hidden Cash (@HiddenCash) May 27, 2014 While the person or group behind the account remains a mystery, they did send an anonymous email to TIME explaining the goodwill and motivation behind the cash giveaways: "I have made my fortune in real estate, and have been able to accumulate multiple properties, whereas so many people can’t afford to buy a house or even a small condo in San Francisco. People who work just as hard or harder than me. So I wanted to give back … But I also wanted to do something that would give back in a fun way, and get people involved." "My message for the ‘haves’ is to be a little more generous, and to give back more,” HiddenCash adds. “I know so many wealthy people who are selfish and greedy, and just want more, more, more. When is it enough? When will you be satisfied? Take a step back, relax, and give back a bit. Putting smiles on other people’s faces will put a smile on your face. Believe me." There's no telling how long the account will stay active or if it is, as some of the more cynical have proposed, a PR stunt, but it's worth keeping an eye on - especially if you could use a little cash infusion.
