Hashflags are Back on Twitter in Time for the World Cup

A hashtag followed by a three letter country code will automatically embed flag emoticons, or hashflags, into a tweet.

The popular feature from the 2010 World Cup that let users embed flag emoticons into their tweets is back in action for this year’s tournament. Country codes are are now hashflags.

A hashtag followed by the three letter country code of any of the 32 countries represented in the tournament will automatically embed a flag emoticon into a tweet.

The feature was introduced by Columbian singer Shakira:

So far, the event has drawn huge levels of social engagement.
