The latest change to Facebook’s News Feed algorithm factors in the amount of time users spend viewing posts, but how are those users spending their time on the social network?

GlobalWebIndex examined actions performed on Facebook by active users over the past month, and the top behaviors were:

  1. Clicked the like button: 69 percent of users 16 through 24, 68 percent of all users
  2. Sent a one-on-one message: 57 percent/54 percent
  3. Read an article: 54 percent/52 percent
  4. Commented on a friend’s photo or video: 54 percent/52 percent
  5. Logged in to see what’s happening: 52 percent/47 percent

GWI said in an email to SocialTimes:

Stories will be up-weighted in importance if a user spends a greater period of time looking at them compared with other things on their News Feed, and this will provide the social networking giant with a new way of identifying which content is generating the most engagement.
