Grindr Reaches 3.5 Million Users in 192 Countries

If Grindr can't help you meet Mr. Right, it can at least introduce you to Mr. Right Here. Since its launch in 2009, the location-based social application just for men has reached 3.5 million users in 192 countries. Who's on Grindr and where are they located? The company recently surveyed 22,000 of its members to find out. For online dating on the go, Grindr makes it easy to take your smartphone out of your pocket and see who else in the network is hanging out nearby. Just put in your name (nicknames are fine), upload a photo if you wish, and answer a few questions about yourself to create a profile.The amount of information you share is up to you, and if you see someone you like, you can invite them to chat. Grindr is free for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Android, and BlackBerry devices. There's also a premium version called Grindr Xtra with enhanced features like priority customer support and unlimited blocking. "Grindr pioneered location-based social networking apps," said Scott Lewallen, Grindr co-founder and senior vice president of product and design in a statement, "and as part of a recent survey we conducted, it's evident that Grindr's geo-mobile feature is attractive to our users. Such data underscores the importance of the technology in the current app culture, and proves that the age-old real estate adage – 'Location, location, location!' – transcends sectors." Conducted earlier this month, the survey uncovered the latest usage and engagement trends among 22,000 of Grindr's members. Here's what the company learned about its community: 58 percent of respondents are between the ages of 18-30. 58 percent of respondents are iPhone users, while 36 percent are Android users. 56 percent of respondents have made one to five new friends using Grindr. 60 percent of respondents enjoy using Grindr for chatting, and 56 percent of respondents like being able to see who in their vicinity is of the same/similar sexual preference. 66 percent of respondents use Grindr for making friends More than half of respondents have made friends with or dated someone they met on the app. The United States has the largest user base of 1,443,500 members. But London is the number one city (195,000 users), followed by Paris (155,000 users), New York (127,000 users), Sydney (92,000 users), and Chicago (80,500 users). There are also plenty of available men in more exotic locations like Iran, Moldova, Malawi, Yemen, Albania and Djibouti. To keep up with Grindr's growing user base, the company has expanded its staff to 45 full-time employees and moved to a larger office in Los Angeles.
