Facebook Adds $100K To Charitable Foundation, Announces Grants To 42 Nonprofits

As part of the expansion agreement Facebook reached with its headquarters city of Menlo Park, Calif., the social network agreed to create a $500,000 foundation. Facebook added $100,000 to that total Tuesday and announced grants of $2,500 to $5,000 to 42 nonprofit organizations in Menlo Park and East Palo Alto, Calif.

Facebook Head of Community Engagement Susan Gonzales told the San Jose Mercury News:

We were pleased by the response. We decided that in order to address a lot of the requests, we’d add $100,000 to help celebrate the launch of the fund.

And Menlo Park Council Member Kirstin Keith told the newspaper:

These are really needy organizations that will helpfully change people’s lives. I look around and I don’t see other corporations doing this. It’s pretty amazing.

Tuesday’s news follows Facebook Co-Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s announcement last month that he and his wife, Priscilla, would donate 18 million shares in the social network to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation.
