Facebook To Award 25 Scholarships For Women To Attend Grace Hopper Conference

By David Cohen

Facebook will award 25 scholarships to females who excel in computer science, enabling them to attend the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing conference in Baltimore Oct. 3 through 6.

The social network said in a note on the Facebook Engineering page that applicants must be either full-time students at universities who are majoring in computer science, computer engineering, or related technical majors; or full-time technical employees at engineering, computer engineering, or hardware engineering companies. International applicants are welcome, but they are responsible for securing their own visas prior to the event.

Applications for the Grace Hopper Scholarship are due Wednesday, Sept. 5, with the winners to be notified Friday, Sept. 14. The winners will receive:

  • Registration for the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing conference.
  • An invitation to a private reception at Facebook with Director of Engineering Jocelyn Goldfein and other Facebook employees during the conference
  • An all-expenses-paid visit to Facebook’s New York office from Sept. 30 through Oct. 2 that includes tech talks, mentoring sessions, and optional sightseeing.
  • Travel and lodging accommodations for New York and Baltimore.
  • A $200 food stipend.

Goldfein wrote in the note announcing the Grace Hopper Scholarship:

Since I arrived at Facebook almost two years ago, I’ve been inspired by our strong bench of technical women and our continued commitment to advancing the cause of women in technology. This conference is a great time for us to be part of the dialog about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Whether through talks and panels by my colleagues and me or conversations on the sidelines, we look forward to connecting with you in New York and at Grace Hopper.
