QR Codes are the successor to the barcodes that are still heavily used. QR Codes can store a variety of information types and can be read very quickly. The QR Code seen here, for example, points to the Social Times Mobile blog category (right here!). The assumption is that Google wants to push NFC (Near Field Communications) as the primary way to expose and consume information over short distances.
