Google Doodle Celebrates Anniversary of 'Little Nemo' Comic

The charming animated doodle on Google's homepage today celebrates the anniversary of "Little Nemo in Slumberland," a comic strip penned by illustrator Winsor McCay beginning in 1905. The doodle shows Nemo asleep in his bed, about to be tipped over into "Google-land." When users click on the image, he falls through a series of panels filled with colorful obstacles that finally send him back where he started.

The weekly comic, which ran in both the New York Herald and William Randolph Hearst’s New York American, focused on a young boy’s adventures in the fictitious realm of “Slumberland,” to which he traveled in his dreams. In 1911, McCay made “Little Nemo” into an animated film.

The doodle shows Nemo asleep in his bed, about to be tipped over into “Google-land.”
