In an effort to build up their social assets in preparation for the looming battle with Facebook, Google is looking to hire a “Head Of Social” according to a recruiting document acquired by GigaOm. The position will be used to launch new products and/or integrate social features into their existing products. While the company admits that they are behind on such functionality, it’s mission critical for Google.
The company recently launched Google Buzz in an effort to fend off Facebook who has rapidly become a 400+ million user behemoth. Following Facebook’s launch of the Graph API, which makes it pretty apparent that Facebook is looking to tackle the social web, Google is quickly looking for creative solutions. It’s not surprising that Google is looking to build up a more significant team.
Over the past few months the company hired Joseph Smarr and Chris Messina, both of whom have played significant roles in the development of many open social web standards. However the company wants to do more than have social web advocates, instead they want to make rapid moves to enter the social space. While the job description doesn’t explicitly state it, the position will most likely entail making a number of acquisitions as well.

This is a new and very strategic position, as Google knows it is late on this front and is appropriately humble about it. In Google’s view, conceptually, there are two ways to tackle social, each impacting who may be successful in this senior post: 1) building an innovative offering specifically in this area; or 2) developing the capability and integrating social into Google’s existing portfolio.
