Facebook Posts Pack Political Punch With Four Weeks Until Election Day

By Jennifer Moire

Tuesday marks exactly four weeks until Election Day, and politics junkies on Facebook are taking to the social network to share and comment on the latest news and talk up Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama.

Facebook lit up late Monday with news of a Pew Research Center poll that shows Romney with a four-point lead following last week’s first presidential debate. Obama was up by as much as nine points in the group’s last poll. On the flip side, Gallup has the president up 50 points to 45 points, reflecting the fluidity of the race.

Many Romney supporters shared the good news via their news feeds.

Romney also delivered a major foreign policy address at Virginia Military Institute Monday, and he posted a photo on his Facebook page.

The U.S. Politics on Facebook page highlighted posts from elected officials around the country, reminding people on Facebook to register to vote.

Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) posted a link to the Louisiana voter registration website, while Democratic Tennessee State Sen. Eric Stewart posted a link to the Honor Vote program, which allows voters to dedicate their vote to a veteran.

Meanwhile, Jason Plummer, the Republican candidate in the Illinois 12th Congressional District race, uploaded this picture to his Facebook page, urging constituents to register before his state’s deadline Tuesday, while Denny Heck for Congress, the Democratic candidate in the Washington 10th Congressional District race, shared this graphic on his Facebook page. The graphic, which was originally posted by the Washington State Democratic Party, has already received more than 55 likes and 97 shares.

Even the president got in on the action through his Facebook page, reminding those Facebook users in early voting states to cast their ballot, just like he did.

Coming up next in the race to the White House is the vice presidential debate from Danville, Ky., Thursday night.
