MySpace Acquires iLike

Our weekly recap from last week included a FriendFeed acquisition and the public launch of the new Facebook search. While it will be hard to beat those stories, we still have plenty of Facebook news that took place over the last 7 days. Additionally there are plenty of stories that we didn't cover on this site that we think are important to highlight so don't miss out on this week's recap if you want all the latest Facebook news! MySpace Acquires iLike The biggest news story of the week was that MySpace acquired one of the largest Facebook application developers: iLike. The reported acquisition price was $20 million. The iLike team will now be joining the new executives at MySpace in hopes that the company can become transformed into an online music behemoth. The first step step to generating more revenue is through the launch of a music download store which actually went live days before the acquisition. U.K. Facebook Cyberbully Is Jailed 18-year-old Keeley Houghton was jailed after tormenting a classmate through Facebook. The bullying had begun four years prior, but climaxed in a wall post on Facebook stating "Keeley Houghton is going to murder the bitch. She is an actress. What a f***ing liberty. Emily f***head Moore." After four years of being abused by Keeley, Emily Moore can sleep soundly knowing that the bully won't be coming near her anytime soon. Rumors Of A Facebook Browser Emerge The rumors actually emerged 10 days ago (via Marshall Kirkpatrick) but the buzz continued through much of last week. According to Marshall, "Netscape founder Marc Andreessen is backing a new browser dedicated to browsing Facebook, called RockMelt". Details are currently sketchy about who is involved in the project but even Marshall suggests that Blake Ross, founder of Firefox and current Facebook employee, may be involved in some way. Whatever this new project is, it definitely sounds exciting! Facebook Releases Twitter Exporter Tool Last week Facebook launched a new Twitter exporter tool which enables Facebook Page administrators to broadcast their messages to Twitter. As Caroline McCarthy accurately describes, Facebook's battle with Twitter is for marketers which is why this is the first service being offered. While we don't know if Facebook plans on enabling the same tool for all users, I'm sure the company hopes that this makes Facebook the default site that publishers first go when they post their content, not Twitter. Facebook Shuts Down Hundreds Of Spam Apps Late in the week Facebook declared war on spam developers with the announcement that they would be shutting down hundreds of applications for violating the terms. One of Facebook's spokespeople told us that all the applications were built by the developers behind "My Calendar", once the second most popular Facebook application. The messages is pretty clear: spam developers will be shut down. Facebook Submits New iPhone Application Last week we had the opportunity to test out Facebook's new iPhone application prior to it being updated in the iPhone application directory. While it still doesn't appear to be live in the app store, I've been using it now for a week and it works great! My guess is that the application will become available at some point this week since it isn't already live.
