Pipe Will Transfer Large Files Via Facebook
Pipe, a startup set to launch in beta Monday, will allow users to transfer files of up to one gigabyte in size via Facebook, using Adobe's Real-Time Media Protocol Flow communication protocol.
Pipe, a startup set to launch in beta Monday, will allow users to transfer files of up to one gigabyte in size via Facebook, using Adobe’s Real-Time Media Protocol Flow communication protocol.
GigaOM reported that an Apple iOS version of Pipe is in alpha stage, and it will be ported to Android, as well.
When files are transferred via Pipe, the recipients will see Facebook chat messages with links to the application and an explainer video, and they must install the app in order to receive the file.
Pipe only supports peer-to-peer file sharing, meaning one user to one user, not to many users.
RTMPF was originally designed for communication between Flash and AIR apps, and it loads files into users’ caches, with Facebook servers and Pipe servers not being used to transfer data.
