Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives recently passed the midway point in a three-week, new media competition, and we have a snapshot of their leaderboard, based on the number of new followers the members have generated.

Currently in first place is Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, of California, with 228 new Facebook fans and an impressive 4,754 new Twitter followers.

The next spot may come as a surprise to some observers. Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot last January in Tucson, is in second place with a total of 862 new fans, followers and subscribers — including 356 new to her official Facebook page.

The congresswoman has not served in an official capacity while she is recuperating in Texas, save for her dramatic vote on the House floor during the debt ceiling debate in August.
