Younger Users Flock To Facebook Mobile; Android Tops Apple In Worldwide Usage

By Justin Lafferty

It’s well-known that more people are accessing Facebook on mobile devices, and the trend is definitely not lost among the site’s younger users. According to a study from Macquarie Research, 56 percent of users between ages 15 and 25 surveyed said they check Facebook from their phones, up from 24 percent last year. Macquarie feels that this could rise to 70 percent next year.

The study picked out users between 15 and 25, feeling that they are the trendsetters and the future mainstream users of Facebook.

Other interesting statistics:

  • Women are more likely to post content than men (20 percent to 17 percent).
  • Men were more interested in reading or responding to updates, in comparison to women (33 percent to 28 percent).
  • 61 percent of women access Facebook mainly on mobile, compared with 51 percent of men. Macquarie feels that next year, these numbers could change to 76 percent of women and 62 percent of men.
  • 59 percent of participants have used at least one Facebook application, with games being the most popular response.

Now that we know what people are doing on Facebook’s mobile platform, how are they getting there? New numbers from Optimal (as first reported by sister site Inside Facebook) show that there are roughly 189.8 million users — 20.1 percent of its membership — accessing Facebook from Android devices and 178.3 million on Apple iOS. Facebook, after giving iOS apps a nice update, is turning its attention to improving the experience for Android users.

Facebook usage on Android is most popular in South Korea (52.6 percent), while most people in Australia and Singapore (both 48.8 percent) are checking their notifications on iPhones and iPads.

What about the U.S.? America has the highest collective penetration of Android and iOS device users, with 83.5 percent of the Facebook population using these devices each month. Although worldwide, more people use Android than Apple to connect to Facebook, the U.S. is among the 38 percent that prefers iOS — 44.1 percent of American users are on Apple; 39.4 percent on Android. In the U.K, Facebook users still prefer Apple to Android, 28.2 percent to 16.2 percent.
