Facebook Is Taking Business From LinkedIn: Jobvite

If you think LinkedIn is the only social network to turn to when searching for a job, Jobvite invites you to think again, as its survey of more than 1,200 members of the work force showed a strong Facebook presence.

“LinkedIn’s strength is with upper and middle management,” Jobvite vice president of marketing Anne Murguia said, adding, “Job seekers are sort of naturally starting to use their Facebook network to help them with their job hunt.”

Jobvite — which rolled out an upgrade of its job-seeking app last month that combining the reach of Facebook’s network with private communications — found that more than 22 million members of the U.S. workforce found their most recent positions through social media, up 7.7 million from the previous year.

Focusing on Facebook, the survey also found that:

  • 86 percent of job seekers have social media profiles, with Facebook leading the pack at 84 percent, and 31 percent having profiles on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
  • More than one-third of job seekers with Facebook profiles do not use that social network as part of their job search in any way, unlike nearly all of those with LinkedIn profiles and three-quarters of those on Twitter.
  • 48 percent of all job seekers, and 63 percent of those with Facebook profiles, have used the social network for at least one activity related to job hunting over the past year.
  • One out of five job seekers added their professional information to their Facebook profiles during the past year.
  • 18 percent of job seekers received job referrals from Facebook friends.
  • 18.4 million Americans said Facebook was the source that led to their current positions.
  • As far as demographics for Facebook job seekers, 56 percent are male, 64 percent are under 40, 36 percent earn more than $75,000 annually, and 42 percent are college graduates.
  • 37 percent of job seekers on Facebook are “super social,” meaning that they have more than 150 contacts or friends on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn.
  • 32 percent of super social Facebook users added their professional information to their profiles during the past year.
