Facebook is bringing Messenger to areas with poor internet connections with its introduction of Android application Messenger Lite.

Much like Facebook Lite, Messenger Lite is a “slimmed-down” version of Messenger that gives users access to the app’s “core experiences”—messaging, sharing photos, sharing links and stickers.

Messenger Lite will initially be rolled out in Kenya, Tunisia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Venezuela, with more countries to be added “in the coming months.”

The app’s engineering manager, Tom Mulcahy, said in a Newsroom post:

Messenger Lite is a slimmed down version of Messenger that offers the core features of Messenger for markets with slower-than-average internet speeds and a prevalence of basic Android smartphones.
