Instagram’s New Privacy Policy Includes Ad Product Similar To Facebook Sponsored Stories

Not long after Facebook altered its data use policy, the social network’s photo-sharing site, Instagram, is also planning some changes. According to Instagram’s newest terms of use, users should expect to see more ads featuring their friends (sound familiar?). Sister site Social Times read through Instagram’s policy — which becomes official Jan. 16 — to let users know about some key facets.

If you don’t have time to read through Instagram’s updated terms of service, Devon Glenn of Social Times outlined a few important changes, namely the fact that Instagram can take users’ photos and likenesses to create ads — similar to Facebook’s sponsored stories. The terms of service describe the new ad units:

To help us deliver interesting paid or sponsored content or promotions, you agree that a business or other entity may pay us to display your user name, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you.

Glenn outlined how Instagram notes that it’s not a photo storage service, so users should be prepared to back up their data somehow in case it crashes or Facebook changes the service. Instagram also pointed out that people who use third-party apps on top of Instagram should contact those developers, and not Instagram, for questions and complaints. Should a user have a legitimate claim against Instagram, they have up to one year to take action.
