Several Facebook status updates per minute were devoted to the passing of Vanity Fair contributing editor Christopher Hitchens, who died last night at the age of 62 after a battle with esophageal cancer.

The news broke late last night, and it’s still a hot topic on Facebook today, as users posted status updates running the gamut from simple rest in peace messages to links to obituaries, tribute articles, links to Hitchens‘ writings, and video footage of the writer and author.

Besides Vanity Fair, Hitchens also wrote for publications and websites including The Nation, Atlantic Monthly, Slate, Harper’s, The Washington Post, and The Huffington Post.

And he authored several books, many with an anti-religion bent, including God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, The Missionary Position: Mother Teresa in Theory and Practice, and Hitch-22: A Memoir.

Hitchens’ opinions on religion were the topic of many Facebook status updates Friday. In a tribute to the late author, even those who disagreed with him grudgingly offered respect in many cases.
