Facebook has hired former Clinton White House press secretary Joe Lockhart to become vice president of corporate communications.
Facebook’s Vice President of Global Communications, Marketing and Public Policy Elliot Schrage confirmed the hire in a prepared statment:
Joe’s arrival brings new skills and greater depth to our incredibly busy team. His experience building and running a press office at the White House gives him particular appreciation for the demands of a global 24-hour news cycle and the challenges of responding effectively to intense scrutiny. His experience launching and scaling a communications firm will help us as we seek to build our team and continue to offer great opportunities for growth and professional development.
He will manage Facebook’s corporate, policy and international communications teams, according to another spokesperson for the company.
Lockhart joins the company on July 15. He will initially work out of the company’s Washington D.C. office but will ultimately move to the California headquarters as soon as family commitments allow.
This seems like quite the coup for Facebook and Lockhart alike. Earlier this year, the social network held recruitment conversations with President Barack Obama’s former press secretary, Robert Gibbs, and decided he wasn’t a match for the job.
