Farewell to Facebook Creative Labs, Slingshot, Rooms, Riff

Facebook Creative Labs arrived with much fanfare when it was introduced in January 2014, but it departed quietly, along with some of its stand-alone applications.

CNET reported that Facebook shuttered Facebook Creative Labs, and that three of its apps have been removed from app stores: Slingshot, Rooms and Riff.

A Facebook spokeswoman confirmed the removal of the apps to CNET, noting that they had not been updated recently and saying:

Since their launches, we’ve incorporated elements of Slingshot, Riff and Rooms into the Facebook for iOS and Android apps.

The social network told CNET the shutdown of Facebook Creative Labs and the demise of Slingshot, Rooms (which will be shut down Dec. 23) and Riff did not mean the end for new, stand-alone apps, pointing to better performing examples such as Paper and Instagram apps Hyperlapse and Layout.

Facebook Mentions—the app for celebrities, public figures and journalists that the social network launched in July 2014–is still going strong, as well, with the addition this past August of live video-streaming feature Live for Facebook Mentions.
