The conspiracy theorists who believe Facebook will eventually control all media saw their fears move one step closer to reality, as Vacaville, Calif.-based newspaper The Reporter announced that under its new system, all online comments must be posted via Facebook. From the Bay Area News Group-owned paper’s announcement:
The Reporter is adding a new way for our readers to comment on the stories we publish.
The new reader commenting procedure will, we hope, allow for more thoughtful commentary from our readers and continue to expand community dialog on local issues of importance.
As with the system some of our sister newspapers in the MediaNews Group family have already instituted, our new system requires online commentators to post their comments via Facebook. If they are not yet a Facebook member, they will need to join Facebook and then post.
We understand that not everyone is a Facebook member and remind readers that letters to the editor are still encouraged and can be set via e-mail to Letters@TheReporter.com or in the mail to The Reporter, 916 Cotting Lane, Vacaville, CA 95688.
Our Opinion page is still one of our newspaper’s most popular and your contributions help make it so.
In the meantime, we are also encouraging our readers to continue to be fans of our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/thereporter. Fans get regular news updates throughout the day and can participate in polls and other events.
