Facebook Co-Founder Chris Hughes has emerged as a possible buyer of left-leaning political magazine The New Republic.

The Huffington Post reported that Hughes, who served as director of online organizing for the 2008 election campaign of President Barack Obama, is exploring the purchase of the magazine.

The New York TimesDealBook reported earlier this week that the owners of The New Republic, including Editor-in-Chief Martin Peretz, hired The Blackstone Group to oversee the sale process.

Hughes, who was Facebook Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg’s roommate at Harvard, is reportedly worth some $700 million, and he launched charity-driven social network Jumo in 2010.
