It turns out that Facebook isn’t buying the former headquarters of Sun Microsystems but rather the neighboring properties at 312 and 314 Constitution Drive in Menlo Park.
The social network purchased the 22 acres of business property via an alias, Giant Properties LLC, on December 27, according to San Mateo Country Databases researched by Palo Alto Online News.
And it sounds like the Sun Microsystems campus has a tenant rather than a buyer, as Menlo Park community development staff were scheduled to discuss “land use entitlements” for that property at a January 28 city council meeting.
The Palo Alto news site didn’t identify the tenant. While it might just be a coincidence that the old Sun digs are gaining a new occupant right when the neighboring properties have a buyer, I’m wondering whether companies that do business with Facebook have the lease. It’s possible that the social network is leasing the property while buying two neighboring parcels, but that seems excessive.
What do you think is happening with the former Sun Microsystems campus? Do you believe Facebook will completely relocate to the property the company has purchased?
