Emerging popular Android apps: MLB.com At Bat, Voxer Walkie-Talkie PTT, Poweramp

This week's top Android apps cover a broad range of applications and subject matter, though games remain some of the most profitable titles on the platform. The start of baseball season sees MLB.com's official At Bat app performing well on Android following a strong week on iOS, while chart mainstays such as Angry Birds from Rovio and LevelUp Studio's Beautiful Widgets remain as popular as they have ever been. This week's top grossing Android apps [Update] Live Holdem Poker Pro -- Dragonplay's online poker game Live Holdem Poker Pro heads up the top grossing chart in the No. 1 position this week, fending off Zynga Poker's snapping at its heels from the No. 2 spot. The game offers live online Texas Hold 'Em poker play against other players and has been installed over 10 million times since its release, monetizing through the sales of two different virtual currencies. MLB.com At Bat 12 -- The Android version of the official MLB.com At Bat app is the No. 4 top grossing Android app this week. Unlike its iOS cousin, which is free to download but charges for subscriptions via in-app purchase, the Android app is simply $14.99 for full access. A free Lite version is also available. [Update] Smurfs' Village -- The Smurfs-themed social game from Capcom's mobile developer Beeline Interactive takes the No. 8 top grossing spot this week. Like its iOS equivalent, the Android version of Smurfs' Village has recently received an update offering additional content for players over level 19. The game monetizes through in-app sales of its premium currency Smurfberries. The Oregon Trail: American Settler -- Gameloft's social game based on the well-known Oregon Trail franchise takes No. 12 in the top grossing charts this week. Oregon Trail: American Settler was updated on Feb. 15 to add new romance-themed downloadable content and additional challenges for high-level players. [Update] Draw Something -- OMGPOP's popular draw-and-guess game closes out our look at the top grossing Android charts this week, hanging in at No. 21. The $0.99 paid version of Draw Something removes all advertising seen in the free version and also provides players with a free package of coins with which to purchase new "color packs" for their drawings. The paid version also carries a larger vocabulary of words for players to draw and guess. Check out our review. This week's top free Android apps [Update] Angry Birds -- Rovio's runaway success continues to perform strongly long after release with a No. 5 placement on the top free apps chart. Angry Birds has been installed over 50 million times on Android devices alone. Voxer Walkie-Talkie PTT -- This walkie-talkie app from Voxer takes the No. 7 spot in the top free apps chart this week. Allowing real-time instant audio, text, photo and location messages to be exchanged between friends in an ad-free environment, Voxer Walkie-Talkie PTT has proven popular with users so far, with over 5 million downloads to date. The app was updated on Mar. 7 with some user interface tweaks and bug fixes. Ninja Chicken -- A quirky free game from MoMinis, Ninja Chicken takes the No. 9 spot on the top free apps chart this week. Challenging players to rescue a deluded chicken from his fantasies of being a ninja, the game has enjoyed over a million downloads to date. Netflix -- The Android app for Netflix's streaming service remains popular, with over 10 million downloads to date and a No. 12 placing in the top free app charts this week. Netflix allows members of the Netflix Unlimited plan to stream movies and TV shows to their devices and share what they are watching to Facebook. The app may have been enjoying some renewed popularity due to the service's recent launch in new territories, including the U.K. Tango Video Calls -- This social app from Tango, No. 21 in the top free apps chart this week, allows users to make free video and audio calls to friends as well as send free video messages with optional funny animations added. Tango Video Calls has enjoyed over 10 million downloads to date. This week's top paid Android apps Poweramp Full Version Unlocker -- Jumping in at No. 2 in the paid app charts just behind Draw Something this week is the full version of Poweramp by Max MP, distributed as a code which unlocks the freely-available trial version. Poweramp is a sophisticated digital music player app that plays a wide variety of file formats, supports Last.fm "scrobbling" and features a broad range of customization options. Beautiful Widgets -- Selected by Google as an Editor's Choice and reportedly the first paid Android app to reach a million downloads, Beautiful Widgets from LevelUp Studio provides clock, weather and other widgets to Android users. It's the No. 3 paid app this week. Camera Zoom FX -- No. 12 in the paid app charts this week is Camera Zoom FX from Androidslide. The app offers a variety of shooting modes and tools to use with Android devices' carmeras as well as a suite of post-processing effects. It normally sells for $4.99 but is temporarily available for just $0.49, and has enjoyed over half a million downloads to date. [Update] Grand Theft Auto III -- Rockstar's classic PlayStation 2 game is still hanging in there at the No. 18 spot in the paid app charts. Grand Theft Auto III hasn't quite broken 500,000 installs as of yet, but is well on its way. [Update] Shazam Encore -- Music-identifying app Shazam Encore from Shazam Entertainment closes our look at the paid app charts this week with a No. 22 placement. The $4.99 app provides unlimited access to Shazam's music tagging and identifying service and also offers a real-time lyrics view in sync with the music the user is tagging, as well as the facility to listen to tagged music in Spotify. The app has enjoyed over 500,000 installs to date.
