Emerging popular Android apps: Airport City, Grow and Draw Something

This week’s Android roundup looks a little different thanks to some very strong debuts that shook up the top grossing charts. Normally the most stable chart, and therefore the hardest to crack, this week new games from Glu Mobile, Zynga and Game Insight all managed to work their way into the top 10. This week’s top grossing Android apps [Update] Tap Fish - DeNA owned Gameview Studios continues to perform strongly on the Android charts, with its game Tap Fish holding the No. 3 spot. Downloads of the title have been on an upward trend for the past month and have now passed 10 million. The game was last updated on Feb. 24 for UI enhancements and minor bug fixes. [Update] Cartoon Wars - Gamevil’s free-to-play war game takes the No. 4 spot on the top grossing chart this week. A blend of tower defense and real-time strategy, Cartoon Wars has been downloaded over a million times already. The game pits two armies of stick figures against one another, the repressed Black and White tribe and the evil Color tribe. Stardom: The A-List - Brand new to the Android Market and already sitting in the No. 5 spot, Glu Mobile’s Stardom: The A-List is a free-to-play game based around climbing up the Hollywood ladder. Users must earn money, deal with agents, dodge the paparazzi and act in a variety of TV shows and movies as they try to become a virtual celebrity. Airport City - Game Insight’s latest hit appears to be Airport City. Released this month and already over 500,000 installs and sitting in the No. 6 spot on the top grossing charts, Game Insight’s latest game challenges players to build and manage an airport. Dream Zoo - Yet another new title making a solid debut, the last entry on our top grossing Android app charts is the No. 7 ranked Dream Zoo. Zynga’s Android Version of its animal care game allows users to breed and collect thousands of different varieties of animals. The app has been downloaded more than 500,000 times since it was released. This week’s top free Android apps [Update] Pandora Internet Radio - Pandora’s free streaming radio app, Pandora Internet Radio hits No. 2 on the free Android charts this week. Updated on Feb. 15 to fix several known bugs and roll out stability enhancements, the app allows users with and without Pandora accounts to access streaming audio. [Update] Ceramic Destroyer - Independent developer Runnergames takes the No. 5 spot with its title Ceramic Destroyer. A physics-based game where a player must fling a ball at a breakable object using a catapult, the more of the object destroyed, the greater the player’s score. The app features hundreds of levels and promises more are coming soon. [Update] Words With Friends Free - Zynga makes our list again in the No. 7 spot on the free Android charts thanks to the popularity of its cross-platform hit, Words With Friends. The game has been downloaded more than 10 million times. Parking Frenzy 2.0 - Games2win.com takes the No. 18 spot this week with its car parking game, Parking Frenzy 2.0. Played more than 2.5 million times on Games2win’s website, the game features 16 levels of parking challenges and realistic driving physics. 60 more levels are on the way, according to the app’s description. Skater Boy - Runnergames also gets its second chart appearance with its new game, the No. 22 ranked Skater Boy. Released on Feb. 27, the game features simple, 2 button controls -- users can choose to jump and/or speed up -- and features 90 levels of obstacles to navigate. This week’s top paid Android apps Draw Something - It’s been a great week for OMGPOP and its game Draw Something. The game has climbed to the top of the iOS charts and is also putting in similar work on Android, where is leads our paid app roundup in the No. 3 position. The game costs $0.99 and our full review of the title can be read here. [Update] Doodle Jump - Established hits like Lima Sky’s Doodle Jump also continue to perform well on the Android charts. This week’s No. 12 paid app, Doodle Jump costs $0.99 and was last updated on Mar. 25, 2011. [Update] Minecraft - Pocket Edition - Mojang’s indie hit Minecraft - Pocket Edition refuses to leave the paid Android charts, this week snagging the No. 17 spot. The $6.99 game was updated on Feb. 11 to add more blocks, the choice between survival and creative mode, zombies, sheep, and a day and night cycle. Soundhound - The paid version of SoundHound is this week’s No. 18 ranked paid app. A $4.99 application that allows users to identify songs by sound, the app promises to recognize a song in as little as four seconds. The app was last updated on Nov. 18. Grow - Finally, independent developer Epic Pixel’s brand-new game Grow closes our Android roundup in the No. 22 position on the paid charts. A twist on the aquarium sim genre, the goal of Grow is not simply to collect fish, but to guide one fish on his quest to become the biggest fish in the tank -- by eating other fish. The game costs $1.99.
