Betaworks One’s “Dots: A Game About Connecting” is celebrating its first year on the app store, with this popular puzzle game achieving some impressive stats over the last 12 months. The game is approaching nearly 20 million downloads, with over five billion rounds of dots being played since the game’s launch in April 2013. That amounts to 9,000 years of total gameplay and half a trillion dots connected in total.
In Dots, players are presented with both single player and multiplayer game modes. The game board appears the same in each, as colorful dots are arranged in rows and columns on the screen. Users tap and drag straight lines to connect these dots and remove them from the board.
In Timed mode, players have 60 seconds to remove as many dots as possible to earn points. In Moves mode, players have just 30 moves to remove as many dots as possible. Endless mode removes the time limit, but is only available with an additional in-app purchase. Finally, the game’s Challenge mode allows users to play against random opponents or Facebook friends.
Dots users have been shown to be heavily engaged with the app, with 40-60 percent Day 1 and 20-40 percent Day 7 retention rates. More impressive, however, are the stats that come from long-term players. To be specific, 25 percent of people who have ever played Dots, still play the game regularly.
Since launch, Dots has received two Webby awards for Mobile App: Visual Design and Mobile App: Game. The title will receive further updates in the future, while Betaworks One is always on the lookout for new collaborations with outside brands to touch the lives of both existing and new players in and out of the US.
