Disney Interactive and Lucasfilm have released an official Star Wars mobile app on iOS and Android, giving fans an outlet for keeping up with the latest franchise news while on the go. The Star Wars app offers three visual themes for the Light Side, Dark Side and Droids, and offers a real-time countdown to the release of Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, among many other features.
The Star Wars app offers text news and videos, as well as a Star Wars-themed weather experience, which compares the user’s local weather to a location in the Star Wars universe. A GIF database allows users to browse and copy Star Wars GIFs, separated by theme, into messaging apps, emails and more, while the “This Day in Star Wars History” feature allows users to browse each day for related news. This history pulls from more than just film news and release dates, and includes information on fan conventions, Star Wars amusement rides and more.
Finally, a second augmented reality feature allows users to scan posters and bring characters and objects to life on their screen. Fans at San Diego Comic Con can try this feature on a poster in the Lucasfilm booth (or found below), unlocking a 3-D Stormtrooper and BB-8. Users can take pictures or videos of these characters and objects, with more set for release over time.
