There are a number of iPhone apps that simplifies the process of stitching together photos to create a panoramic view or a VR (virtual reality) pan and scan view. One that I learned about just this week makes the photo taking and sharing process extremely simple. And, it is free.

The app tells you when the iPhone is vertical and ready to create a panoramic image. All you have to do after than is move your phone from left to right (or right to left) until the yin-yang symbol segments match you.
