DeNA unveils Marvel themed card-battle game Marvel: War of Heroes

DeNA has unveiled its upcoming Marvel comics themed game will be a card-battle game called Marvel: War of Heroes. The title will be available on the Mobage platform for both iOS and Android in the fall. The game will likely be the first North American release to come from DeNA and Disney Japan’s recent partnership. Originally announced in March, the agreement gives DeNA the right to release three Disney-branded games featuring original Disney characters and Marvel Superheroes in Japan and North America. Marvel: War of Heros is being developed by DeNA and features original art from Marvel artists, and an original script written in cooperation with Marvel writers. In the game, players take on the role of a S.H.I.E.L.D agent tasked with assembling a team of Marvel superheroes. It’s not surprising to see DeNA use its agreement with Disney to release a card-battle game based on the Marvel Universe. Card-battle games are already hugely popular in Japan, and so far DeNA’s Rage of Bahamut has been a North American success, hitting No. 1 on the Android and iOS top grossing app charts. At the same time, independent Japanese company ATeam’s card-battle game Dark Summoner has also seen considerable success on Android and iOS, indicating the North American market may be just as receptive to the genre as the Japanese market has proven to be. During a press event last week, DeNA subsidiary ngmoco told Inside Mobile Apps they were keen to capitalize further on the Rage of Bahamut’s profitable formula with IP that has more North American appeal. The Marvel universe is not only popular thanks to comic books and movies, it’s also already proven to be a hit in the social game space. Disney Playdom’s Facebook social game based on the Marvel universe, Marvel: Avengers Alliance peaked earlier this summer with 9.1 million monthly active users and 1.6 million daily active users, but is still doing very well. According to our traffic tracking service AppData, the game currently has 7.1 million MAU and 1.3 million DAU, giving it a retention rate above 18 percent. Last week DeNA announced it is developing a Transformers themed card-battle game called Transformers Battle, which is also slated for a fall release.
