New data from Comscore shows that Facebook hit over 220 million worldwide unique visitors in December, a 10% increase from November’s 200 million. By contrast, MySpace added 4 million uniques in December, up to 125 million. Over 20% of people on the Internet worldwide visited Facebook in December, according to Comscore. Facebook itself reports 150 million active monthly users.
For those tracking Facebook’s international growth by country, these growth rates map onto what is being seen in countries around the world. Facebook is growing at double digit monthly rates in many global markets – and for many, those growth rates are increasing. Facebook’s growth rate accelerated by at least 25% in 47 countries in Q4 2008 over Q3. Its quarterly growth rate more than doubled in 28 of those countries in Q4.
December US data from Compete and Hitwise showed conflicting reports of the relative performance of Facebook and MySpace in the United States. Compete showed Facebook overtaking MySpace in the US for the first time in December, while Hitwise showed MySpace still holding a lead in share of visits.
