Chirpify Being Used For Political Fundraising On Twitter

The solicitation emails are coming fast and furious in the U.S. as Romney and Obama race to raise funds. And now they can add a new dimension to their efforts - Twitter donations via Chirpify. Not interested in political fundraising? Well it works for all kinds of fundraising, so if you're a nonprofit (or anyone wanting to make or receive donations via Twitter) you'll want to check this out too. We told you before about how Chirpify works and how folks were using it to buy, sell and make donations, but here's a recap: Chirpify transforms Twitter from a broadcast platform into a transactional one. To transact on Twitter Chirpify users need only Tweet simple commands such as "buy," "pay" and "donate." It recently launched its new Twitter Fundraising for Politicians platform, and reports a commitment for at least 25 U.S. Senate and House candidates to use Chirpify for their 2012 political campaigns, as well as a special “Tweet a Presidential Candidate” website. People can donate to either campaign (or participating candidates and nonprofits) by tweeting, “Donate $amount to @BarackObama for Election 2012” or “Donate $amount to @MittRomney for Election 2012” after signing up for a Chirpify account. And these candidates get their own fundraising pages too. “There are hundreds of millions of dollars being raised for U.S. political campaigns every year, and an estimated 140 million Twitter users, “said Chirpify CEO and Founder Chris Teso. “Yet until now there was no way to directly exchange currency on Twitter. It is a no brainer to introduce Twitter Fundraising for Politicians.” Chirpify makes the transactions happen via PayPal and sends donors and politicians email and direct message receipts. The only caveat, of course (from a political fundraising standpoint) is that the donation needs to come from qualified individuals to whom the following statement applies: This contribution is made from my personal funds and is not drawn on an account maintained by a corporation, labor union, or national bank; and I am a U.S. citizen or lawfully admitted permanent resident and this contribution will not be reimbursed by another person.
