Entrepreneurship Myth 146: You must be a passionate fan of a subject in order to create a successful business from it. Wrong, says Carley Roney, co-founder of The Knot. When her partners first broached the topic of a weddings website back in 1996, her response was not at all enthusiastic.
“Oh God, no!” Roney recalled in our Media Beat interview. “I’d just gotten married, and the industry was such a nightmare. Everything was just impossible to find and so outdated. And we walked away that day from that meeting, and I thought ‘Ya know? Maybe that’s exactly what would make this a good business, because weddings are so completely out and in need of a serious upgrade.'”
Roney spoke to mediabistro founder Laurel Touby about how The Knot became the top online weddings destination without ever spending “a dime” on marketing and why ignoring advice from AOL was the best thing they ever did.
