Candy Crush Saga and The Ville are this week's gainer and loser amongst the Top 25 Facebook Games of August 2012

It's the final week of August, which means it's time for us to take a look at the games with the most traffic on the Top 25 Facebook games of August. The games on display here are often separated by such large numbers of daily active users that even dramatic traffic shifts may not do anything to change a game's position for several months. Here's what we've looked at so far: August 9, 2012: No. 25 (Top Eleven) through No. 19 (Pool Live Tour) August 16, 2012: No. 18 (Dragon City) through No. 13 (Zynga Slingo) August 23, 2012: No. 12 (The Sims Social) through No. 7 (Diamond Dash) This week, we’re looking at No. 6 through No. 1. 6. Candy Crush Saga King.com's Candy Crush Saga proves that Facebook players still love the "Saga" titles. The game surged up to reach a new peak traffic level, going from 4.2 million DAU to 4.5 million. Since the game launched in April, it's seen strong, steady growth that's been slowing for the past two months. That said, Candy Crush Saga is still up by 1.2 million DAU from where it was on July 1. Candy Crush Saga may not grow much more before next month's list, but the fact that it's still growing means it should move up by at least one spot. 5. Bubble Witch Saga King.com's other "Saga" game on this week's list, Bubble Witch Saga, is down from 4.5 million DAU at the start of the month to 4.2 million. Bubble Witch Saga launched in September 2011 and (like the other games in the "Saga" series) demonstrated strong, steady growth before peaking in April with 6.7 million DAU. Since then, the game's been on the decline, and the traffic drop-off doesn't seem to have been stymied by coming to iOS devices. Bubble Witch Saga will probably switch places with Candy Crush Saga, but it's unlikely it'll move much more than that on next month's Top 25 list. 4. Bubble Safari Zynga's Bubble Safari continues to lose players, down from 6.3 million DAU on August 1 to 5 million. Although Bubble Safari launched in May, it didn't really take off until June, when it peaked with 7.4 million DAU. Since then, traffic's been dramatically dropping; July saw the game drop to 5.7 million DAU before bouncing back up to the point it started August at. Based on this traffic pattern, it's entirely possible that Bubble Safari might fall enough over the next two days that it could be passed by Candy Crush Saga, though it doesn't seem likely enough to predict with any real certainty. 3. Words With Friends Zynga's Words With Friends is also down, having gone from 6.3 million DAU to 6.1 million. The game peaked in February with 9 million DAU, and traffic's been gradually dwindling since then. That said, the most dramatic drop off seems to have been between March and May; since this point Words With Friends has only lost 500,000 DAU. The continued popularity of the game on mobile devices (especially when people are using public transit to commute) will probably continue to keep Words With Friends among the top ten games on our monthly lists for quite some time to come. In fact, Words With Friends will probably take the No. 2 spot next month, based on how The Ville is performing. 2. The Ville Zynga's The Ville is practically hemorrhaging traffic, having gone from its peak of 7.3 million DAU to 4.1 million in only a month. The game launched in late June but didn't receive the benefit of Zynga's cross-promotion until July, when its daily active users began to skyrocket. Early this month, EA filed a copyright infringement lawsuit over the game, which didn't seem to drive any interest in the game. We've heard from several users that they've been turned off by the game's spam-like Timeline posting, but the exact cause of the traffic decline isn't immediately apparent. With the numbers falling this quickly, The Ville probably won't be in the top six games on next month's list. 1. Texas HoldEm Poker Zynga's Texas HoldEm Poker continues to hold onto the top spot of the Top 25 Facebook games, but it's fallen a bit from 7.4 million DAU to 6.9 million. As opposed to recent Zynga titles, Texas HoldEm Poker's growth has been steadily increasing over several years (instead of receiving an initial surge in traffic and then having numbers drop off over time). February 2011 saw the game peak with 7.6 million DAU and then fell as low as 5.9 million later that year, but it's since been growing gradually again. As a result, it seems pretty certain that Texas HoldEm Poker isn't going to fall out of the No. 1 spot any time soon. All data in this post comes from our traffic tracking service, AppData.
