Voters in Massachusetts are heading to the polls to elect either Democrat Martha Coakley or Republican Scott Brown as the replacement for Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.), but from a social-media standpoint, there was already a clear winner by a landslide.
AdAge.com reports that the Brown campaign has been much more active on social-media sites, with the Republican candidate besting his Democrat counterpart 10,765-3,657 in Twitter followers, 83,535-15,573 in Facebook friends and 675,208-76,805 in YouTube video viewings.
David Meerman Scott, a Coakley supporter and author of The New Rules of Marketing and PR, told AdAge.com he was surprised that the Coakley campaign didn’t use Twitter to publicize President Barack Obama’s visit to Massachusetts this past weekend to support Coakley, saying, “It was all old-school ways of getting people to spread the word. It felt like they were trying to win Ted Kennedy’s seat using Ted Kennedy’s techniques.”
